A state of emergency has been declared in the Russian Arctic archipelago of Novaya Zemlya, as sailors face a gigantic”invasion” of polar bears, together with over 50 seekers looking for food and harassing inhabitants in the metropolitan landscape.

The move has been declared Saturday after a few weeks of close encounters between the hyperactive furry beasts.

“People are fearful, they are frightened to go outside, daily life is in turmoil, parents are wary of allowing children go to schools and kindergartens,” deputy head of the local administration, Aleksandr Minayev, said in a statement.

The town of Belushya Guba appears to be the most affected by the polar bear difficulty, together with at least 52 specimen roaming around the vicinity. A bunch of videos have emerged online attempting to invade homes — as well as showing the bears strolling the streets, digging down food waste.

The stressing migration of bears started late last year once the animals began to flock to the settlements of Novaya Zemlya en masse, a few videos recorded them rummaging through a local dump. This appears to be the one the Arctic region has suffered over the last few decades.

“I’ve been at Novaya Zemlya because 1983, yet I’ve never seen such a massive polar bear intrusion,” head of local government, Zigansha Musin, said, adding that at least five wolves seem to be staying at the village all day long.

While polar bears do not normally hunt humans, preying on different sea mammals instead, a close encounter with them can lead to serious injuries or being mauled to death.

To fend off the beasts, Belushya Guba has already erected some fences and tried to frighten the predators off by automobiles and warning shots. Some bears appear to be eager to keep in the town despite all of the efforts of individuals\.

The town ultimately decided to look down several critters — that proved to be easier said than done, because the polar bears are an endangered species protected from Russia. The government has requested the nature protection watchdog for permission to shoot and kill the bears, however the petition was denied. The watchdog is set to dispatch a team of specialists to the village to try and handle the issue without unnecessary violence.
