Manchester United are relying on a favour from rivals Manchester City to avoid a summer of insanity.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ended sixth at the Premier League and confront a Europa League qualifier on July 25 unless City defeat Watford in the FA Cup final on Saturday.
The early start to the year would play havoc with a preseason program that is already in place, such as friendlies in Australia, Singapore, China and Cardiff.
United are set to play Tottenham at Shanghai on July 25 — the same day as the possible Europa League second qualifying round first leg.
If City can finish the final leg of their national treble, United will input the Europa League at the group stage. If not, they will have to play six consecutive Thursdays — at the next qualifying round, next qualifying round and play-off around — before being entered into the draw for the group stage on Aug. 30. The first collection games will be performed on Sep. 19.
Sources have informed ESPN FC who United have also agreed a treat Kristiansund — Solskjaer’s hometown team — to perform an additional favorable in Oslo on July 30. On the other hand, the club have been made to delay the announcement until after their Europa League program is more clear.
The group are due to wait for Carrington for the beginning of preseason training on July 1 prior to flying to Australia on July 7. They’re due to play with Perth Glory in Perth on July 13 before a game against Leeds United, also in Perth, on July 17.
From that point, United fly to Singapore to perform Inter Milan on July 20 before facing Tottenham at Shanghai on July 25 and AC Milan in Cardiff on Aug. 3.
The newest Premier League campaign begins on Aug. 10.
Resources have told ESPN FC that contingency plans are in place if the summertime fixture listing is interrupted by Europa League qualifiers.
Options include satisfying friendlies using a reserve group or moving the dates and places of games.
